You don’t fully exist and this is why

What does it really mean to exist? Who are we truly?

PLAY TO LISTEN

Have you ever heard the expression:

“You are not who you think you are, you are who you think others think you are” #mind-blown 🤯.

Sometimes when we think of our existence or even reality, doesn’t it sometimes feel a little bit like the matrix? Existential questions can be so overwhelming that we can start wondering, what if it is all a big fat lie! Sometimes, there are these tiny moments, that make you wonder. Is it your perception? Or something someone said? Or that exact same person walking across the street you swear you knew that was gonna walk at exactly that time! #dejavu.

Whatever it is, sometimes seems clear, that our existence is fleeting and momentary. Sometimes we feel present, and sometimes don’t. Other times we feel cared for, and sometimes we feel not. Sometimes we are in full abundance connected to all living things, and sometimes we are just in bed watching Netflix eating a bag of crisp.

What does it really mean to exist? Who are we truly?

Some say, we are what we do when no-one’s watching, the things we do every day, our habits, our thoughts, that sense of careless ness, freedom, and even that goofiness coming from “if people only knew”. But if nobody is watching, are we truly existent? If you disconnected from the world, talked to no-one ever again, and moved to a deserted island, were you even real? The fact that our existence is so interconnected with everyone else’s, is what makes our realities richer, and also a lot more complex.

Sometimes our realities can revolve around things that never happened, things that people talked about, something we’ve seen, or things that are just in our minds. Perhaps… our existence is linked to our perception, actions and thoughts, words and ideas.

But did you know, that the perception of who you are, also lives in other people’s minds? Not just your own. And everybody has a different version of you. And all those different realities coexist at the same time, together with yours, with your other “yous”.

Quoting from a great post from Oogimauskiie:

I read a book that blew my mind. The main character goes crazy when he realises no one really knows him. The gist is that the person you think of as “yourself” exists only for you, and even you don’t really know who that is. Every person you meet, have a relationship with or make eye contact on the street with, creates a version of “you” in their heads. You’re not the same person to your mom, your dad, your siblings, than you are to your coworkers, your neighbours or your friends. There are a thousand different versions of yourself out there, in people’s minds. A “you” exists in each version, and yet your “you”, “yourself”, isn’t really a “someone” at all
